Quick Answer

  • If you earn income as a content creator, gather every information return actually received and reconcile each payer, form, and box to platform statements, processor records, deposits, and gross receipts. Also gather support for claimed business costs. New Jersey's $1,000 rule is a payer state-copy filing rule; it does not replace the federal Form 1099-K issuer/payee-statement thresholds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to report income from platforms that didn't send me a 1099?

Yes. All income is taxable regardless of whether you received a 1099. Platforms may not issue forms for amounts below their reporting threshold, but you still need to report the income on your tax return.

Can I deduct my home office as a content creator?

A deduction may be available when the statutory tests are met. Business use generally must be regular and exclusive, subject to the storage and daycare exceptions, and the space must qualify as a principal place of business, a place to meet clients in the ordinary course, or a separate structure. The simplified method is $5 per square foot up to 300 square feet; the regular method uses supported allocable expenses.

What is the QBI deduction and can I claim it?

The Qualified Business Income deduction under Section 199A can allow eligible self-employed taxpayers to deduct up to 20% of QBI after allocable deductions. The taxable-income ceiling, income level, and Specified Service Trade or Business rules can reduce or eliminate the deduction. Note: NJ does not allow this deduction on your state return.

Do I need to pay quarterly estimated taxes as a creator?

Federal estimated-tax rules generally apply when you expect to owe $1,000 or more after withholding and credits. Payment amount, timing, safe harbors, withholding, exceptions, and the annualized-income method determine any underpayment addition; making a payment does not by itself guarantee that no addition applies. NJ has a separate system that generally applies when expected tax due after withholding and credits is more than $400.
